A Call to Arms: Rising as Bold and Courageous People of God

A moment in the story of David and Goliath doesn't get nearly enough attention. Everyone knows the ending. Everyone knows the sling, the stone, the giant falling face-first into the dust. But tucked inside 1 Samuel 17 is a detail that changes the entire picture of what happened that day. While an entire army of trained soldiers stood paralyzed with fear, watching a pagan giant mock and defy their God morning and night for forty days, a young shepherd boy did something no one else was willing to do. He ran toward the enemy.

He did not cautiously approach. He did not inch forward with reluctance. He hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. That image should stop us cold and make us ask a hard question: In the face of the evil confronting this nation and the church of God today, are we running toward it or away from it?

The Command That Keeps Repeating

In Joshua chapter 1, God prepares a leader for one of the most significant assignments in Israel's history. What is striking is not just what God says, but how many times he says it. Within just a handful of verses, God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous not once, not twice, but three times. Three times. And twice within those same verses, God reassures Joshua that he will not be left alone, that the Lord his God is with him wherever he goes.

This is not accidental repetition. God knows the human tendency to shrink back. He knows that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to move forward in spite of it. And so, He commands it, repeats it, and backs it up with the most powerful promise available: His own presence.

Alongside that command, God makes the connection between obedience to His Word and genuine success unmistakably clear. The instruction to meditate on Scripture day and night, to speak it, to live by it, and not to drift from it to the right or the left is not optional spiritual advice. It is the foundation upon which every promise of blessing and prosperity rests. For then, God says. Not before. Not without. For then.

The Failure That Brought Us Here

Judges chapter 6 introduces us to Gideon, a man hiding from the enemy when the angel of the Lord finds him and calls him a mighty man of valor. The nation of Israel had turned from God, served idols, and as a result found themselves oppressed and impoverished by their enemies. Sound familiar?

The pattern throughout Scripture is consistent and sobering. When God's people drift into disobedience and complacency, the enemy fills the vacuum. This is not ancient history. This describes where much of the American church finds itself today.

The statistics are difficult to sit with. Studies show that the typical American congregation is nearly seventy percent female and thirty percent male. Thirteen million more adult women attend church on any given Sunday than men. And perhaps most alarming, ninety percent of boys raised in church will leave by their twenties and never return. These numbers are not just a church attendance problem. They represent a generation being raised without the Spiritual foundation and example they desperately need.

Joshua 1:14 speaks directly to this. The mighty men of valor were called to go armed before their brothers, to help them take the land. The women, children, and livestock were to remain protected. The men were to lead the charge. The breakdown of this God-ordained order- men failing to lead spiritually, failing to go to war against evil, failing to model what it looks like to follow Christ with everything- is a significant factor in the condition of the nation today.

Patriots and Christians

On July 4th, 1775, General George Washington issued his first orders to the Continental Army. What stands out is that his emphasis was not primarily tactical. It was spiritual. He required his soldiers to attend church services, prohibited profanity and drunkenness, and made clear that he believed the success of the entire military campaign depended on maintaining the favor of Divine providence. He understood something that many modern Christians have forgotten: the blessings of God are directly connected to obedience to God.

Washington wrote that to the distinguished character of patriot; it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian. That statement is both a rebuke and an invitation. We can wave the flag, wear the colors, and celebrate this nation's freedoms while contributing nothing to the Spiritual foundation that made those freedoms possible.

Second Chronicles 7:14 lays out the path forward with remarkable clarity. It describes a people called by God's name who humble themselves, pray, seek his face, and turn from their wicked ways. The promise attached to that obedience is not vague or uncertain. God says he will hear, he will forgive, and he will heal the land. The healing of a nation begins not in Washington, D.C., but in the hearts of God's people.

The Battle Is Real and So Is the Authority

Ephesians 6:12 makes clear that the struggle is not ultimately against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of darkness. This is not cause for fear. Luke 10:19 records Jesus giving his followers authority over all the power of the enemy and the assurance that nothing shall by any means hurt them. The battle is real, but the victory in Christ is equally real.

What is not acceptable is treating that spiritual reality as a reason to stand still. Evil does not stop itself. The principalities and powers described in Ephesians 6 manifest in the physical world through people, policies, and cultural movements that are openly hostile to Christ and His church. Prayer is essential and must come first. But prayer was never meant to replace action.

The men who gathered in Boston more than 250 years ago were fed up, and they acted on it. They sought God, stood together in one accord, and took on a giant. The church of Jesus Christ in America faces a similar moment. The call is not to panic. The call is to rise, to be strong and courageous, to run toward the giant the way a shepherd boy once did, fully confident that the battle belongs to the Lord.

He is with us. He will not leave us. For then we will make our way prosperous. For then we will have good success.
